Most of the time, I just head downstairs to my home office.  No greenhouse gasses are generated.  As the downstairs is heated with a radiant floor, it&#8217;s the warmest part of the house in winter.\u00a0\u00a0  So that&#8217;s very efficient, but doesn&#8217;t quite qualify me as a green business &#8211; at least not until we get the planned solar panels up on the roof!<\/p>\n<p>More to the point, however, my clients tend to be folks who operate independent, small (often micro) Nova Scotian businesses.\u00a0 They live and work here by choice, as do many Nova Scotians.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not always an easy choice.\u00a0 By running a successful business, however, they are helping others to live and work here as well.\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy to be part of that, and strive to contribute to their success.\u00a0\u00a0 Some are in <a title=\"Tourism websites, Nova Scotia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.holmpage.com\/holmpage\/web-design-portfolio\/tourist-accommodations.htm\" target=\"_blank\">tourism<\/a>, some are <a title=\"Nova Scotia artists\" href=\"http:\/\/www.holmpage.com\/holmpage\/web-design-portfolio\/artists-crafts.htm\">artists and craftspeople<\/a>, some are <a title=\"Nova Scotia lawyers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.holmpage.com\/holmpage\/web-design-portfolio\/law-firms.htm\" target=\"_blank\">lawyers <\/a>and some are builders of log and timber frame homes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-584\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"584\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/novascotiaphotoalbum.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/local-living-economies-and-balle-nova-scotia\/buffet7s\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/novascotiaphotoalbum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Buffet7s.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"300,213\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Arlington Timber Frames\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Arlington Frame Company raising a timber frame in Cape Breton&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/novascotiaphotoalbum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Buffet7s.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-584\" title=\"Arlington Timber Frames\" src=\"https:\/\/novascotiaphotoalbum.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Buffet7s.jpg\" alt=\"Arlington Frame Co.\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arlington Frame Company raising a timber frame in Cape Breton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a title=\"Timber framers in Nova Scotia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.holmpage.com\/holmpage\/web-design-portfolio\/builders-construction.htm\" target=\"_blank\">timber framers<\/a> in particular are quite aware that they add value to the forest simply by using wood for something more enduring than pulp fibre.\u00a0 Hardwoods such as oak and elm are prized by builders and their clients, as are large softwood trees such as pine.\u00a0 The companies that drive the clearcutting of the forests would rather eliminate the hardwoods with herbicides and harvest the faster-growing softwood trees for pulp.<\/p>\n<p>Timber frame homes are built to last a long time.\u00a0 Their interiors are a celebration of the beauty of wood and craftsmanship.\u00a0 They are usually enclosed with energy-efficient materials.\u00a0 So they provide enduring value on many levels and make a solid contribution to the local living economy.<\/p>\n<p>A visit to the Nova Scotia <a href=\"http:\/\/museum.gov.ns.ca\/moi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Industry<\/a> in Stellarton made me realize how self-sufficient Nova Scotia used to be, from the growing of food to the manufacture of automobiles!\u00a0 It is a direction we need to move towards again.\u00a0 The reasons are both environmental and economic.\u00a0 A secure, local food supply and lower greenhouse gas emissions are part of it.\u00a0 And by supporting local businesses, we keep more money circulating in the local economy, and we all benefit.<\/p>\n<p>So kudos to the people who started up <a title=\"BALLE Nova Scotia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ballens.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">BALLE-Nova Scotia<\/a> for getting the balle rolling!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is an organization I&#8217;m proud and happy to have\u00a0 joined &#8211; the Nova Scotia chapter of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies.
